TAS2022: Back Home

The Tasman Bridge from the Botanic Gardens

We have arrived back home on the night ferry this morning after an extremely enjoyable 10 days in Tasmania. After enjoying really good weather for the majority of our stay, the weather deteriorated for our last night and day, but more about that later.

TAS2022: Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain with Dove Lake in the foreground

We were only at Cradle Mountain for two nights, one full day, but we managed to cram in more than 20 km of walking – bearing in mind that the terrain is anything but flat, this was not an insignificant achievement. Not only that, but we were so blessed with the weather – clear blue skies on our one big day of walking!

TAS2022: Stanley

The westward view from our Lakeside cabin near Stanley at sunrise

Our first overnight stay on our 2022 visit to Tasmania was Stanley. After arriving on the overnight ferry into Devonport at 06:00 and a rather choppy crossing, we were disembarked by about 07:30 and on the road west along the north coast. Although we had a quick DIY breakfast on the boat, our first stop was Penguin for a very welcome cup of tea and some pancakes (pikelets). Rather than making a dash for Stanley, mainly because check in at our accommodation was not until 14:00, we planned a few stops on the way.

Road Trip 2022 (RT2022)

Lake Eyre Sunrise (2017 Trip)

With the prospect of colder weather and a yearning for getting on the road again, K and I are in the middle of finalising our plans for our 2022 road trip. The start of our journey last year was dictated by Covid, state border crossings and Covid compliance requirements, but we eventually managed to get to WA and have a great experience. This year our planning seems to be dictated by everyone else having similar plans such that some of the areas we are hoping to visit are booked out, with NSW and QLD school holiday periods adding to the problem. Add to this the further layer of the on-going rain event that has prevailed on the east coast during the past two months and we are having to go into a lot of detail and make bookings that in some cases are more than two months away.

Visiting: SAM

On my list of key buildings to photograph was SAM, Shepparton Art Museum. It was therefore a happy coincidence that I was asked to work in my Safety Officer role at the recent Shepparton Illuminate – a festival of music and light adjacent to the building. While there I took great delight in visiting SAM with my camera in hand.

VIC2022: Visiting – Lake Charm

Laked Charm under a very heavy sky

Decisions on where to go camping can be made based, on one hand, on detailed research, or on a whim without too much knowledge of the selected location. The great thing about the latter approach is that one does not have any great expectations and therefore is not disappointed with the outcome, as was the case when visiting Lake Charm recently.

Prints on Show #1

Post Covid 19, I am planning to spend more time and resources as an addition to my project work on promoting my photography through displaying framed prints at galleries, exhibitions, competitions and other relevant venues. I am pleased to kick start this with a couple of opportunities of prints on show for the public to view my work.

Project: Grain Harvest

In my post ‘Visiting Sea Lake’, I mentioned that the reason for the visit was to work in the grain harvest. Although this was aimed at filling in some time, the primary reason was to learn more about how the grain industry works. The seed was sown during our return trip through the WA wheat belt – where the paddocks of wheat were endless and workers were in short supply. So, this post summarises what I managed to glean from my fellow workers, truck drivers and farmers (and a bit of on-line research).
