RT2022: Mataranka and Litchfield

Mataranka Falls

Our planned departure from Mataranka to Litchfield National Park on Tuesday morning was to be a quick visit to the mechanics to re-grease and re-fit the cup on the wheel. However, things did not end up as planned (this seems to be the story of this trip).

RT2022: Mataranka

Mt Isa at night

Saturday 23 July and we have been camped at Mataranka for three nights so far, having arrived here on Wednesday after two long distance drives during the previous two days. We had made the decision to head for here, partly due the fact we enjoyed it so much last year and partly to get some warm weather. We have not been disappointed on either account.

RT2022: Boulia

Diamantina River

We arrived in Boulia on Sunday the location of one of the highlights of our trip – the camel racing. However, our travels between our departure from Carnarvon on Thursday and our arrival here was not without its dramas.

RT2022: Carnarvon National Park

The main attraction of Carnarvon National Park was, as been recommended by many, Carnarvon Gorge. Our camp for the three nights and two days was Sandstone Park – a bush style campground situated on top of a low plateau about 6 km from the car parks for the main Carnarvon Gorge walk.

RT2022: Gayndah

As I explained in my last post, we arrived in Gayndah on Friday afternoon, having stopped in Gympie to have the batteries checked. The campground we decided upon was the Heritage Railway, not surprisingly, adjacent to the disused Gayndah railway station. As we were expecting the rain, we erected the awning so that we could cook meals and, in the process, keep dry.

RT2022: Rain

In my last post, I mentioned that a substantial amount of rain was forecast, well, it essentially rained for 24 hours from Friday afternoon and there is more forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Had we not had a few bookings, we would have been much further west and away from the rain by now.

RT2022: Lamington National Park

Shelley Beach

After four nights at Red Cliff Campground, our next stop was Binna Burra in Lamington National Park, Queensland. By the end of the weekend at Red Cliff, we were about the only campers left, but here are a couple of associated stories.

RT2022: Red Cliff Campground

Brooms Head

It seems to have been a while since my last post, but now that we have arrived at Red Cliff Campground for five nights, I have some time to bring you up to date with our travels (and tackle some other admin matters). Red Cliff Campground is a few kilometres south of Yamba on the NSW north coast and, at last, we are having some warmer weather.

RT2022: Myall Lake

One of the disadvantages of the cold weather is that the fingers are a bit reluctant to work on the keyboard. However, we have now arrived at Myall Lake National Park, north of Newcastle, camping close to the sandbar at Symes Bay. The weather has marginally improved, but the nights are still very cold, but I won’t bore you with my complaints about the weather.

RT2022: Cold

Leaving home, we knew that the weather was not going to be great, but we were not really prepared for how cold it has been. Our first day on the road, covering almost 650km, was raining most of the way and cold! Our first night in Cowra was freezing so we didn’t get much sleep and the next two nights in Lithgow were even colder, although by the second night there we slept with so many layers that it was bearable. Now we are in a slightly warmer climate, thank goodness.
