In this final post about our recent trip to Borneo, we travel back to Kota Kinabalu on the west coast of the island. We added these three nights so that we could explore the city in our own time. Our first task on arriving back to the hotel was to recover and re-arrange our cases before a light meal and an early night.

Having completed one excellent tour, the start of our next one, returning to the rainforest, was a short flight away in Sandakan. We had originally booked an early morning flight to get to Sandakan for the start of the tour, but it was cancelled before we left Australia. This meant catching the next flight and missing the first activity of the tour. This was a visit to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre at Sepilok – as we had already been there, we were not too disappointed.

Our stay at the Kinabalu Pine Resort on our way to Kota Kinabalu on the west coast was not the most comfortable for me as I had a very upset stomach. This did not stop me from admiring the morning view of the prominent Mount Kinabalu from our room balcony. At 4,095m high it is the highest mountain in Borneo.

Our tour group of 24 was split into two, with each going to different rainforest lodges at Sakau on the Kinabatangan River. On the way we had a toilet stop at a service station, where sustaining chocolates and nuts were purchased by everyone. As our first introduction to the rainforest river, the crossing to the lodge lasted less than 10 minutes, our group being transported to the opposite bank of the river by two separate boats with the luggage arriving in a third.

Leaving our house to drive to Adelaide airport, we were faced with a journey of about 24 hours that included three separate flights to start the first of two tours in Borneo. The first of these was a 10 day Trip a Deal tour in Sabah taking us from Sandakan on the east coast to Kota Kinabalu via the rainforest. However, two of these days were travelling, so the tour was really 8 days. The second was a 3 day Borneo Eco Tours visit back to the rainforest. We finished the trip with three further nights in Kota Kinabalu.
