RT2022: Cold

Leaving home, we knew that the weather was not going to be great, but we were not really prepared for how cold it has been. Our first day on the road, covering almost 650km, was raining most of the way and cold! Our first night in Cowra was freezing so we didn’t get much sleep and the next two nights in Lithgow were even colder, although by the second night there we slept with so many layers that it was bearable. Now we are in a slightly warmer climate, thank goodness.

TAS2022: Back Home

The Tasman Bridge from the Botanic Gardens

We have arrived back home on the night ferry this morning after an extremely enjoyable 10 days in Tasmania. After enjoying really good weather for the majority of our stay, the weather deteriorated for our last night and day, but more about that later.

TAS2022: Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain with Dove Lake in the foreground

We were only at Cradle Mountain for two nights, one full day, but we managed to cram in more than 20 km of walking – bearing in mind that the terrain is anything but flat, this was not an insignificant achievement. Not only that, but we were so blessed with the weather – clear blue skies on our one big day of walking!

TAS2022: Stanley

The westward view from our Lakeside cabin near Stanley at sunrise

Our first overnight stay on our 2022 visit to Tasmania was Stanley. After arriving on the overnight ferry into Devonport at 06:00 and a rather choppy crossing, we were disembarked by about 07:30 and on the road west along the north coast. Although we had a quick DIY breakfast on the boat, our first stop was Penguin for a very welcome cup of tea and some pancakes (pikelets). Rather than making a dash for Stanley, mainly because check in at our accommodation was not until 14:00, we planned a few stops on the way.

Road Trip 2022 (RT2022)

Lake Eyre Sunrise (2017 Trip)

With the prospect of colder weather and a yearning for getting on the road again, K and I are in the middle of finalising our plans for our 2022 road trip. The start of our journey last year was dictated by Covid, state border crossings and Covid compliance requirements, but we eventually managed to get to WA and have a great experience. This year our planning seems to be dictated by everyone else having similar plans such that some of the areas we are hoping to visit are booked out, with NSW and QLD school holiday periods adding to the problem. Add to this the further layer of the on-going rain event that has prevailed on the east coast during the past two months and we are having to go into a lot of detail and make bookings that in some cases are more than two months away.

VIC2022: Visiting – Lake Charm

Laked Charm under a very heavy sky

Decisions on where to go camping can be made based, on one hand, on detailed research, or on a whim without too much knowledge of the selected location. The great thing about the latter approach is that one does not have any great expectations and therefore is not disappointed with the outcome, as was the case when visiting Lake Charm recently.

Visiting: Lake Tyrrell

At long last, after two weeks of waiting in Sea Lake, I started working on Monday at the Sea Lake Grain Flow receiving depot. However, the weather continues to be an influencing factor in my shifts, with two being shortened due to high moisture levels in the grain and today’s being cancelled all together. I spent my waiting time wisely by building up a series of images of Lake Tyrrell and Sea Lake, so in this post, I am pleased to share some of my stories and images of Lake Tyrrell.

Visiting: Sea Lake

Lake Tyrrell Viewing Boardwalk

On returning from our WA2021 trip, I found that settling down into a routine at home rather challenging, due partly to the lack of photographic assignments. So, faced with a few months without any meaningful work, I decided to do something about it and successfully applied for a casual job working in the wheat harvest. For a number of reasons, I chose and am now visiting Sea Lake for an extended period.

WA2021: Reflections

Cooper Creek

With just over a week since we returned from our three month trip, I now have a chance to look back on our adventure and to share some of my reflections with you. It is a strange feeling being back to a normal routine (well, as normal as Covid permits) and certainly not easy to settle down.
